Spring Break Clay and Playdough Creations

Homemade playdough for Austin to use.
Stephanie's clay creations. :)

As usual, my pictures are out of order. Stephanie has been working at the Subway by our house this week during her spring break. This evening, she made some little creations out of her stash of clay she has leftover from a clay button class she took with Deidre. She did not enjoy making the buttons, but she DOES enjoying sculpting her clay into cute figures. My camera decided the battery was dead, so was only able to get the pictures of the cat, mouse, scratching post, and baby sitting in the chair Stephanie made. Austin wanted some "clay" to use. I made a play dough recipe that I got from my sister-in-law Renae around 30 plus years ago. It was originally in one of the past nursery manuals from the church. I guess I will post the recipe. If you do not get the water and salt mixture hot enough, it will need a cup or more of flour extra. If the water is really hot and all of the salt dissolved, then it does just take the stated amount of flour. Austin just worked the extra flour in, as ours obviously did not boil long enough.

Great Play Dough Recipe:

2 cups water
1/2 cup salt
food coloring

Bring to a full rolling boil. Remove from heat and add:
2 Tablespoons Alum (find in the spice section--used to keep your dill pickles crisp)
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 1/4 cup (or more) white flour

Knead on a floured board. (Or just in the big bowl you mix it in.) Store in an air tight container. It lasts well and is a very nice play dough--my kids loved it better than the store bought variety.
